Chell Lewis "Lewy" Bear of San Diego died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at the San Diego Naval Hospital following a short illness of cancer. He was 65.
Military memorial services were held Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Fort Rosecraus National Cemetery, Point Loma, Calif. No local services are planned.
Mr. Bear was born June 24, 1939, in Missoula, Mont., the son of Chell and Maxine Bear. He came to Alaska in the fall of 1949. The family drove the Alaska Highway, and their Uncle Walt Bear of Fairbanks flew them to Kenai, as there was no road to Kenai from Anchorage. He attended elementary school in Kasilof and Kenai, and high school in Kenai and Palmer. He graduated from Palmer High School in 1958.
Mr. Bear joined the Navy in 1959 and retired as a senior chief after 30 years of service. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
Mr. Bear was preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Chris Larsen; Chris' son, Silas; and brother-in-law, Claude Bradford.
He is survived by his stepson and wife, Michael and Monica Bradburn, and their children, Lexie, Onne and Mike, of San Diego; brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Carole Bear of Soldotna; sister, Carolyn Bradford of Soldotna; brother, Chris "Billy" Bear of Soldotna; nine nieces and nephews; 11 grandnieces and nephews; and one great-nephew.
Arrangements were made by the National Cremation Service in Chula Vista, Calif.
