Smashing pumpkin helps save dog's life

SPARTA, N.J. (AP) -- Neighbors tossed a pumpkin, then rocks, through the front window of a burning house so a dog trapped inside could escape.

Passers-by saw flames coming from the roof of Kathy Tiso's house on Monday, police said.

The owners weren't home, but neighbors knew the family's dog, a 12-year-old chocolate Labrador retriever, was inside.

Barbara Bieraugel said she picked up a large pumpkin that was on the front stoop and heaved it at the front window.

It smashed two layers of the triple-pane glass. She and another neighbor threw rocks to finish the job.

''We got the dog out just fine,'' Bieraugel said.
