Bonnie Rumley

Obituary

Posted: Tuesday, November 18, 2003

Longtime Sterling area resident Bonnie Rumley died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, in her sleep. She was 74.

Mrs. Rumley's ashes will be scattered on her homestead at a private family ceremony.

Mrs. Rumley was born Nov. 29, 1928, in North Powder, Ore., to Alice and George Looslie and was the eighth of 10 children. She arrived in Alaska with her husband, Jack Rumley, in 1950 with their three oldest children.

They initially resided in Homer, Seward and then in 1962 they homesteaded in the Sterling area. Mrs. Rumley was still residing on the homestead noted for its log sided fence that is seen from the Sterling Highway.

In her earlier years, she worked at the Sterling polling sites at every election. She was a dedicated homemaker and a voracious reader. Even her great-grandchildren were amazed at the amount of books "Granny" could read.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, George and Alice Looslie, and sisters, Leona Yonce and Ester DeVore of Oregon.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Donna Rumley of Sterling; daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Bill Harris of Sterling, Nancy and Larry Engel of Palmer and Jacki and Dave Barden of Ritzville, Wash.; granddaughters, Jacki Walgenbach and her husband, Chris, of Sterling and Anne Rumley of Bend, Ore.; grandsons, John Harris and his wife, Sharon, of Kenai, Dan Rumley of Sterling, Marty and Chad Engel of Anchorage and Heath and Ryan Barden of Spokane, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Zach, Jake and Bailey Walgenbach, all of Sterling, and Isabelle Harris of Kenai; brothers, Dan Looslie of Elgin, Ore., Garry Looslie of Pendleton, Ore.; sisters, Ruth Conway of Union, Ore., and Geogia Wright of Bend; and nephew, Terry Pollard of Seward.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, 801 W. Fireweed, Ste. 103, Anchorage, AK 99503.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
