Josephine 'Jo' Geerin

Sterling resident Josephine "Jo" Geerin died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at Maui Memorial Hospital in Wailuku, Hawaii, after a 15-month battle with lung cancer. She was 72.

A celebration of life with family and friends will be held in July at the Fish-On Inn, the family's fishing lodge on the Kenai River.

Mrs. Geerin was born Oct. 15, 1932, in Meriden, Conn., to Peter and Mary Przybyla. At 18, she enlisted in the U.S. Army. While serving in Germany, she met her future husband, Raymond Geerin. They were married Sept. 4, 1952, in Germany. Following her discharge from the Army, she started her 35-year career working for civil service.

In 1966, the Geerins moved to Alaska, where her husband was stationed at Fort Richardson. Following his retirement from the Army in 1969, they remained in Anchorage to raise their five children.

In 1975, they purchased a piece of property on the Kenai River and spent the next 10 years building their retirement home and fishing lodge, the Fish-On Inn. For the past several years, they spent their summers in Alaska and their winters at their condo in Kihei, Maui.

"Jo was a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker who had many friends and would always share her talents in fishing, gardening, cooking and crafts with others. She was passionate about life and shared her joy. She could put a smile in your heart with her generosity," her family said.

Mrs. Geerin is survived by her husband of 52 years, Raymond Geerin; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Rusty Hathaway of Maui; daughter and son-in-law, Theresa and George Rockhill of Eagle River; son, Mike Geerin of Anchorage; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Kent Hackleman of Soldotna; son, John Geerin of Anchorage; grandchildren, Jessica, Jennifer and Justin Rockhill, Cherie and Rachael Hackleman and Jimmy and Trevor Geerin; great-grandchild, Trinity Rose Zurfluh; and brother, Ted Przybyla of Vienna, Va.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Josephine Geerin at 1599 Clifton Road, NE Atlanta, GA 30329.
