Skyview takes 4th at King of the Mountain

Seward finishes 5th, Kenai 6th, Nikiski 8th while 6 kids from peninsula win titles

Skyview placed fourth, Seward took fifth and Kenai claimed eighth at the King of the Mountain wrestling tournament at Seward High School on Saturday.

East won with 222 points, ahead of second-place Dillingham (216) and third-place Colony (168.5). Skyview finished with 167.5 points, ahead of Seward (159) and Kenai (80). Cordova came in seventh with 77 points, ahead of Nikiski (67), Grace (45.5), Unalaska (39), Voznesenka (37), Soldotna (35), Ninilchik (30), Ackiachak (16), Seldovia (6) and Cook Inlet Academy (0).

Skyview had two champions, two second-place finishers, three third-place finishers, a fourth-and-fifth-place finisher and three sixth-placers.

Pat Sheridan won the 171-pound class by beating Kenai's Jaron Dambacher and Eddie Buffington captured the 189-pound crown with a win over Dillingham's Quinton Backford.

Other local champions included Nikiski's Matt Parker (103 pounds), who won a title by defeating Skyview's Bryce Wilson after losing to him twice in the last eight days; Seward's Dylan Beck (152) edged Dillingham's Douglas Larsgaard for a championship; Ninilchik's Austin Vanderford (160), who claimed a state title last season, beat East's Nicolas Herron-Webb for a crown; and Soldotna's Nathan Strieby won the heavyweight title by knocking off Colony's Dyllen Buck.

Also from the Panthers, Michaela Hutchison (119) placed second after falling to Joe Hunt of Dillingham; Alex Janorschke (130) placed third with a win over Colony's Skye Rench; Jared Thomas (140) took third with a win over Seward's Mike Zweifel, who wound up fourth; Kenny Mahan (171) finished third by beating Ronnie Barlow of Colony; Adam Byrne (215) placed fourth; Freddie Pollard (152) earned fifth; and Monica Hutchison (112), Jeremiah Berzanski (160) and Nick Vanbruggen (189) all finished sixth.

For the Seahawks, Brandon O'Brikis (215) placed second with a loss to East's Andrew Wilson; Alan Logan (189) placed third by beating Colony's Paul McKeon; Jonas Romero (HWT) finished third with a victory over Cody Lewis of East; Scott Reierson (119) and Matt Nyholm (145) both placed fourth; and Koal Backlund (160) and Kyle Kain (HWT) each took fifth.

Kenai's Kris Osbekoff (119) placed third with a win over Reierson; Quentin Pribbenow (112) and John Hughes (125) both finished fourth; and Joey Aho (119) wound up in sixth place.

For the Bulldogs, Stony Wall (135) finished third with a win over teammate Tyler Peek, who claimed fourth and Josh Vance finished fifth.

Voznesenka had both Joe Manushev (130) and Leo Polushkin (215) place fifth and Max Matveev (135) finish sixth.

Service tops Soldotna

Service defeated Soldotna 42-22 on Friday in a dual meet in Anchorage.

Soldotna's biggest problem in the meet was numbers. The Stars were able to put wrestlers on the mat in seven of the 14 positions. The Stars received pins from Les Baker at 285 and Dakota Elsey at 189. Wes Mills had a 20-8 major decision at 140, while Tanner Link had a 6-4 victory at 152 and Edward Vanvelzor had a 7-6 victory at 160.

Soldotna places 7th at West

The Soldotna wrestling team placed seventh while Homer finished eighth at the West High Invitational on Saturday.

Kodiak won with 175 points, ahead of South (165), Chugiak (139), West (127), Service (123.5), Wasilla (104), Soldotna (84), Homer (80), Wasilla Lake (51), Eagle River (31.5), ACS (31) and Palmer (20).

The Stars had two champions while the Mariners had only one.

Soldotna's Mills (135) edged Chugiak's Grant Sullivan, 10-8, in the finals to capture the crown while Baker (HWT) pinned Kodiak's Frank Lee in just 17 seconds in securing his championship.

For Homer, Ben Daigle decisioned Nicholas Cropper, of Service, 5-2, to win the 125-pound title.

Also for Homer, Tom Appelhanz (135) edged Kodiak's Tuck VanMatree, 6-5, to place third; Robby Brymer (140) also placed third after pinning Wasilla's Chris Milstead in 3:32; Tris Brymer (152) placed fourth; Brittany Wyatt (112) and Larry Croff (215) both took fifth; and Victoria Locklar (130) placed eighth.

For Soldotna, Tyler Powell (125) placed fourth; Elsey (189) claimed fifth; and Link (145) and Vanvelzor (160) both finished seventh.
