GALENA (AP) -- An armed Galena man held authorities at bay for nearly 12 hours before surrendering, Alaska State Troopers and Galena police said.

Larry Wholecheese, 45, was being held at the Fairbanks Correctional Center on charges of first-degree sexual assault of a minor, first-degree escape and third-degree assault. Bail was set at $100,000.

Galena Police Chief Gerald Meece and a trooper went to Wholecheese's home on Friday afternoon to interview him on allegations that he sexually abused a 12-year-old girl.

An hour into the interview, Wholecheese ran upstairs and could be heard loading a shotgun. Meece and the trooper called for backup and negotiators arrived from Fairbanks about an hour later. Wholecheese agreed to meet with one of the negotiators and surrendered peacefully early Saturday.
