Carl M. Haller Sr.

Longtime Kenai and Kasilof resident Carl M. Haller Sr. died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at the Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna. He was 88.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25 at the American Legion Post No. 20 in Kenai. The service will be in conjunction with the Moose Family Center, which he was active in.

Mr. Haller was born July 7, 1918, in Portland, Ore. He graduated from Parkrose High School and took some college classes at Anchorage Community College. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on April 3, 1944. He was a shipfitter second class and received the American Area Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign and World War II Victory Medals. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 21, 1946. He moved to Alaska in 1954 and resided in Haines. He worked in Copper Center, Skagway, Sitka and Whittier before settling in Kenai. He had worked as a pile driver and welder for piers, the oil pipeline and dismantling oil storage tanks.

Mr. Haller owned Haller Construction Company on Haller Road in Kenai. He enjoyed reading, construction, carpentry, visiting with friends, playing cards pool, golf, pinochle, scrabble, cribbage, darts and shuffleboard and racing stock cars.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 20, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10046, Elks Club and the Loyal Order of the Moose.

“He was unbeatable at Scrabble. He enjoyed life to the fullest right up to the end.” his family said.

Mr. Haller was preceded in death by his parents; son, Carl M. Haller Jr., and a brother.

He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Julee Ann and Roger Grady of Waldport, Ore., Carlotta Jean and Tom McLeod of Aumsville, Ore., and Kathleen Susan Derischebourg of Seal Rock, Ore.; brother, Theodore F. Haller of Portland, Ore., and Robert Haller of California; grandchildren and their spouses, Dawn Marie Thill of La Pine, Ore., David D. and Chia Grady of Bend, Ore., Tim and Lorelei McLeod of Oregon City, Ore., Andy and Laura McLeod of Aumsville, Ore., Jana and Greg Andrews of Austin, Texas and Sara Jane Derischebourg of Newport, Ore.; great-grandchildren, Connor Jason Thill, Ahblin and Sala Grady, Isabella McLeod, Arianna, Andrew, Aaron, Alec, Alex, Jake and Abby McLeod, and Kyla, Kacie, Bailey and Jose Andrews; and stepsons, Lance and Kim Peterson of Alaska.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
