Posted: Tuesday, November 21, 2000

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The Alaska Postal Service is turning to more environmentally-friendly vehicles that burn both gasoline and ethanol.

The 305 so-called flex fuel vehicles will be used at 12 locations: Anchorage, Palmer, Wasilla, Eagle River, Fairbanks, Kenai, Homer, Soldotna, Juneau, Kodiak, Sitka and Ketchikan. The new vehicles are 2001 Ford Utilimasters with V-6 engines.

The fleet will use ethanol when the fuel becomes available in Alaska.

The existing fleet of 1993 Jeep Cherokees will be sold at auction. The date of the auction has not been announced.
