IRS looks for Alaskans due refunds

The Internal Revenue Service is looking for 342 Alaskans who have $175,690 coming to them, according to the federal tax collector.

''The average amount of Alaskan taxpayers' unclaimed refunds is $514,'' said Judy Monahan, an IRS spokeswoman.

People have many reasons why they might overlook or forget a refund check, she said. The most common reason is that people move and tax refunds come back to the IRS as undeliverable. Taxpayers should make sure return addresses are correct, she said.

This year, the IRS received 128 million individual tax returns and issued 91 million refunds.
