JEANERETTE, La. (AP) -- A school principal jumped out of an airplane at 10,000 feet to a keep a promise to reward students for better test scores.
Althea Self had promised last year that she would jump if Jeanerette Elementary beat the target for test scores that the Department of Education set in 1999.
The target was exceeded, and Self took the leap -- her first skydive.
She plummeted in a free-fall for 45 seconds before the skydiving instructor to whom she was buckled pulled the parachute cord.
