Want to play hoops in Arctic Winter Games?

Posted: Friday, November 21, 2003

Arctic Winter Games Team Alaska recently announced selection procedures in the sport of basketball. Athletes who are selected for the basketball teams will be part of Alaska's 377-person delegation to the 2004 Arctic Winter Games, scheduled for Feb. 28 through March 6, 2004, in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, part of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

Individuals who would like to be on Team Alaska's basketball squads at the 2004 Games should contact the coaches of the boys or girls team, respectively. Any prospective team member should send a reference and a videotape of himself or herself in competition (not in a practice session) and provide the name and contact information for his or her school coach so that the Team Alaska coach can get in touch with that coach. Prospective competitors must have been born in 1988 or later. Ten boys and ten girls will be selected for Alaska's teams.

The coach of the boys team is Arne Erickson of Hoonah. His address is P.O. Box 481, Hoonah, AK 99829. He can also be reached by phone at work (945-3611) or at home (945-3221). Homer's Deb Lowney is the girls coach. Her address is P.O. Box 1445, Homer, AK 99603. Those looking to reach Lowney also may leave a message at 235-6154.
