Reader favors price competition

Posted: Monday, November 21, 2005

I would like to express to you and to the readers of the Clarion, that there are many, many people who are very happy about Wal-Mart coming to the Kenai Peninsula. We have been waiting for this to happen for many years.

This will keep the transferring of money and goods on the peninsula, rather than driving it to Anchorage. Our community will benefit from the competition it will bring to the peninsula, especially between Fred Meyer and Wal-Mart.

For instance, one year ago, I bought a Crock-Pot at Wal-Mart in Anchorage, not on sale but regular price for $19.99. The next day, while standing in line at Fred Meyer, a couple standing right behind me was purchasing the same Crock-Pot. I asked them the price of that item and they said “$32.99.”

Again, competition is a good thing for consumers.
