After-school programs worth every effort

Posted: Tuesday, November 22, 2005

I’ve been working and volunteering in the elementary schools throughout the Soldotna area for over six years. I have enjoyed working for after-school programs throughout this time. I spent time at Redoubt Elementary Boys and Girls Club After-the-Bell Program, the Soldotna Elementary After-the-Bell Program, and currently Kalifornsky Beach Elementary’s 21st Century After School Program.

After-school programs are essential to the success of many students, helping children to complete their homework, initiate follow through with goals, while giving the children a safe and fun place after school.

In all my experience, it has taken the cooperation of everyone to aid in each child’s success and development — just as in a regular school day. From volunteers to the principals of the school, cooperation and an integration of responsibility have been essential.

In saying that, I want to thank all the people who support these programs, including the older students from the schools who “peer tutor.” Thank you to the instructors and students at the Kenai River Campus who fulfill time for credit in their college classes. Thank you to the teachers and librarians who have welcomed after-school programs into their workspace. Thank you to the parents who come in and volunteer. Thank you to the principals who promote and aid in the development of after-school programs. Thank you to all the community members who understand the impact of after-school programs and work to keep these programs in our local schools.
