Wasilla edges Skyview for North/South crown

Posted: Sunday, November 23, 2003

Skyview won three of its four championship matches to take second place at the annual North-South Wrestling Tournament this weekend in Wasilla.

Skyview scored 169 points to finish just behind the host Wasilla Warriors, who tied Skyview with a tournament-high three individual champions. However, Wasilla racked up just enough team points to earn a narrow 6.5-point margin of victory.

Taking home top honors for the Panthers were Eli Hutchison at 119 pounds, Dallas Seavey at 130 pounds and Brandon Cleveland at 152.

Jake Savely also made it to the final match before losing a 6-2 decision to Palmer's Trevor Pempek. Skyview finished the tournament with seven wrestlers placing in the top four.

The Nikiski Bulldogs also had a strong showing at the tournament, which is considered one of the top wrestling meets of the season. The Bulldogs finished fourth out of the 24 teams participating in the event.

Nikiski finished with 78 points, led by Lance Penhale, who won a major decision over Wasilla's Alan Bartelli in the finals.

Nikiski's Justin Tumbaga earned a tight 3-1 decision over Chugiak's Travis Schultz at 140 pounds, while Jared Mazurek lost by default at 135, still good enough for fourth place.

Soldotna's Ben Breakfield was SoHi's top performer, taking second place at 160 pounds.

The Stars also got fourth-place finishes from Jeremy Kauffman at 145 pounds and Jake Howarth at 152 to finish in eleventh place with 56 points.

Other peninsula team performances included Homer in 12th place with 55 points and Kenai in 21st with nine. Monte Garroutte led the Mariners with a second-place finish at 135, while Simeon Daigle added a third-place finish for Homer.
