Five pins get job done for Skyview

Posted: Wednesday, November 24, 2004

The Skyview wrestling team defeated Homer 46-22 Tuesday in a dual meet at Skyview High School.

The Panthers rolled up points quickly with two forfeits and pins from Shane Strausbaugh, Tony Gibson, Eddie Buffington, Tyler Wehrli and Michaela Hutchison. Homer received pins from John Bouman, Tom Appelhanz and Simeon Daigle.

The only two matchups of the evening that didn't end in a pin came from Homer's Camron Hagen and Skyview's Elliott Gauthier at 130 and Homer's Louden Greiner and Skyview's Eli Hutchison at 135.

In the match at 130, Hagen notched a major decision over Gauthier by a score of 15-6.

"Elliott did well, but he has a hard time with Hagen," Skyview assistant coach Eric Willets said. "He has a tough time with Hagen's style."

At 135, Hutchison remained undefeated in his high school career with a 13-4 major decision over Louden Greiner.

"Eli has so much background in wrestling that when he faces better wrestlers, he wrestles better," Willets said.

Homer wrestling coach Chris Perk said Greiner had lost to Hutchison 7-3 earlier in the season, but that Greiner had a tough time keeping up with the best takedown artist in the state Tuesday.

Greiner hurt his shoulder in the match against Hutchison but still came back to pin Skyview's Matt Nyholm in an exhibition match.

"He's the team captain and that showed leadership," Perk said. "He went out there with the bad shoulder and still gave it everything he had."

Perk saw several other positive developments for his team Tuesday. Tris Brymer avenged an early season loss to David Japhet in an exhibition match, while freshman John Bouman started off his high school career with two wins.

Perk also said Brandon Weaver, who was pinned in the dual meet but came back to take a 9-7 decision over Gordon Shangin, continues to show promise for a first-year wrestler.

Both Skyview and Homer will now take a break for the Thanksgiving holiday.
