A former deck hand for the Alaska Marine Highway Ray Tessaro opened Kenai River Pizza about a year and a half ago and has started a student of the week free pizza program to encourage school kids to do well and work hard. "I figure over a year's time every kid should be able to win a free pizza for one reason or another for doing good in math or science, improved attendance, or hitting the books a little harder, I leave it up to the schools to decide" says Ray. Currently schools participating in the program include Kenai Middle School, Aurora Borealis, K-Beach Elementary, and the Boys & Girls Club. "Any school can come in and sign up for the program if they are interested, it's our way of giving back to the community by doing something positive for the kids that are trying hard. We also help out the Peninsula Brown Bears, the Oilers, and a lot of the local churches with programs for the kids," said Ray.
Tesarro says he misses the sea but likes the Pizza business because it keeps him home near his family more, "I had to be gone six months out of the year and now when I go out on the water it's to have fun. My buddy owns Quidos Pizza in Anchorage and he taught me how to make really great pies. My favorite? Pepperoni/Jalapeo pizza! We serve the best pizza on the Peninsula and you can get it by the slice for a quick lunch.
Just try a slice and you'll be convinced," he said. Kenai River Pizza also serves strombolis and spaghetti pasta topped with homemade sauces, "Every batch is made from scratch and will dazzle your taste buds," adds Ray.
Kenai River Pizza is located next to Subway by the new Carrs/Safeway mall in Kenai. You can dine in, carry out, or Kenai River Pizza will deliver. To make a friend stop by for a slice, to place an order phone 907-335-2555.
