Refuge reopens firewood area

The Funny River Road firewood area on the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge opened for personal use firewood cutting Saturday. Those using the wood cutting area must first obtain a permit at the refuge visitor center on Ski Hill Road in Soldotna.

Permits and maps may be obtained from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. A fee of $25 is charged for the permit. The public is reminded that wood obtained from this area is for personal use only, and may not be sold or bartered. For more information, call the refuge at 262-7021.

Thanksgiving-Christmas food drive under way

Butler's Carpet Cleaning in Sterling is asking for people to donate canned and other nonperishable food items for a food drive during November and December. All donations go to the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank. For more information, call John at 260-9121 or 252-9121; or the food bank at 262-3111.

Chamber prepares for lights parade

The Electric Light Parade will be at 6 p.m. Friday in Kenai as part of the Christmas Comes to Kenai festivities. Businesses, organizations and individuals can enter a float in the parade. For the registration form, call the Kenai Chamber of Commerce at 283-7989. Registration is requested by Wednesday.

Soroptimists to begin fund-raiser

Soroptimist of the Twin Cities will begin its Sees Candy fund-raiser. Members are now taking orders for Christmas. To place orders, contact Lyn Hodel at 262-9253 or a Soroptimist member. The order deadline is Dec. 2.

Biologist to discuss bears

Bear biologist Dr. Steve Stringham will discuss "The Body Language of Bears" at 1 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center. He will discuss his research into bears, his life raising orphaned cubs, some new video footage of two cubs he is working with and information about bear viewing issues in west Cook Inlet. Club to hold auction

The Peninsula Take a Break Club, affiliated with Stonecroft Ministries Inc., will hold its annual auction from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Dec. 10 at Solid Rock Conference Center, Mile 90.5 of the Sterling Highway in Soldotna. Family center plans potluck

The Kenai Peninsula Moose Family Center will hold a Filipino-Amer-Asian potluck Christmas party at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 14 at 12853 Kenai Spur Highway. Bring a dish to share and a gift for exchange, costing less than $10, for children ages 1 to 10. Attire is semi-formal.
