1 cup shortening or margarine

1 cup sugar

1 cup brown sugar

3 eggs, beaten

1 lemon rind, grated

1/2 orange rind, grated

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon cloves

1/4 teaspoon mace

3/4 cup nuts, finely chopped

1 teaspoon baking soda

4 to 5 cups flour

Cream shortening and sugars until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well. Sift dry ingredients with spices and flour. Add 1/2 the flour, mixing well. Add remaining flour and knead thoroughly. Add nuts. Store in tightly covered container in refrigerator overnight or longer. Roll dough into thin ropes and cut with a sharp knife dipped in flour or cold water. The pieces should be about the size of a hazelnut. Lay pieces separately on greased baking sheet. Bake at 350 for seven minutes or until golden brown. Remove from cookie sheets and cool.

"These were things we sat out for Santa. And Santa gave them back to us, too. We thought it was funny that the same cookies and coffee that Santa liked, our dad liked, too," Morse said.
