Community Thanksgiving dinner set

The Salvation Army will hold a community Thanksgiving dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at its community center building at the corner of Second Street and Forest Drive in Kenai. Food donations still are needed. For more information, to volunteer or make a donation, call 283-4035 or 283-3879.

Public health plans one-day closure

The Kenai Public Health Center will be closed today due to Thanksgiving.

Food handlers class scheduled

The state of Alaska Food Safety and Sanitation Program will hold a food handlers class from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday at the state Labor office in the Kenai Mall. There is no fee. Preregistration is required. For more information, call Jerry Farrington at 262-5210, ext. 242.

Choir fund-raiser planned

There will be an ugly truck contest and Chinese auction at 6 p.m. Dec. 3 at The Place in North Kenai. The proceeds will benefit the Kenai choir's all-state and Europe student trips. For more information, call Ray at 335-0777.

T-200 poster contest begins

The annual Tustumena 200 Sled Dog Race poster design contest has begun. The winners of the contest will be invited to ride in the ceremonial start of the race and the wining picture will be reproduced on the poster for the 2005 Tustumena 200. The second-place drawing will be used for the race program.

Entrants must be in grades one through six. One entry per student is allowed and the pictures must be original, with no computers, copies or tracing used. Crayon, markers or colored pencils are allowed. Pictures should show friendly competition, the humane care of sled dogs or musher-dog team involvement in the T-200.

All entries must be on 8 1/2-by-11-inch paper. The artist's name, address, city, phone, teacher's name, school and grade should be on the back written in pencil. Entrants are asked to not fold entries. Entries should be submitted to Jersey Subs in Soldotna by Dec. 8. Winners will be notified by mail.

Christmas bazaar set

The Ninilchik Native Descendants will host its annual Christmas bazaar from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Ninilchik School gymnasium. For more information, call Jamie Leman at (907) 567-3361 after 6 p.m. on weekdays.

'Toy and Joy' applications being accepted

The Salvation Army's "Toy and Joy" Christmas sign up will be now through Dec. 17. Applications are available at The Salvation Army family service office at 11824 Kenai Spur Highway. The office hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Applicants are reminded to not wait until the last minute. For a list of information that is needed in the application process, call 283-4035 or stop by the office.

Safe Sitter classes offered

Central Peninsula General Hospital will hold Safe Sitter classes from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Dec. 20 and 21 at the hospital. Children must be 11 years old at the time of class and be preregistered.
