Chugach forest remains closed to snowmachines

Posted: Monday, November 26, 2001

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The Chugach National Forest remains closed to snowmachines because there's too little snow, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The agency says there's too little snow in the forest to sustain snowmachine activity, or any other vehicle, without damage to vegetation.

Last week, Turnagain Pass had more than 2 feet of snow, but the Forest Service says more is needed. Warmer weather and rain also have led to a reduction in the snowpack.

Normally, the forest is open to snowmachines by about Dec. 1. But officials have said the inadequate snow cover may delay the opening this year.

The agency's Web site, www.fs.fed.us/r10/chugach, offers up to date information on forest openings and closings.
