BARROW (AP) -- The sun has set for the winter in Barrow, but the northernmost city has a new source of light these days.

An electronic message board just went up outside Barrow City Hall. According to city officials, the new community information board is the first of its type in Barrow.

The board is a hit with locals, who regularly slow down to read the information posted, said Bob Thomas in the city's recreation department.

Thomas said the automated board contains a running display of time and temperature, along with a list of community events and announcements. One of the first items posted was the birth of a baby belonging to a city maintenance worker who helped install the board.

Best of all, Thomas said, the $35,000 board is supposed to be fully weatherproof.
