"We have a very loving and generous and giving community, they've been with us for 18 years now," June Harris, President of the Women's Resource & Crisis Center, told the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce last week. Harris and Marcia Beauchamp took the opportunity to announce the results of their 18th annual Radiothon fundraiser. This year's goal was $50,000, and according to Harris they have now received more than $53,000 with additional pledges yet to come in.
The City of Kenai donated the land 18 years ago at Lee Shore where the Center is located and the community donated the materials and labor to build it. Every year since the community has participated in live radiothon fundraiser over local station KSRM. During the event, members of the community go door to door to local businesses soliciting support and phoning the results back to the station to be broadcast. Every year ACS wireless has provided free wireless phone communication to the volunteers that have made the unique event possible. In appreciation for their continued support, June Harris, presented ACS Sales manager Theresa Colton with a plaque at the Chamber meeting, "We give great thanks to ACS and KSRM who have been with us from the beginning, we just can't say enough good about these people, we couldn't do it with out them," said Harris.
Next year the WRCC intends to move the radiothon to the spring, sometime in April, to avoid the conflict with the annual WRCC Run for Women, which has also become a popular fundraising event for the Center. "Our Run for Women has grown so large and our radiothon sort of comes right on top of it, so the community is seeing us out there on a continuing basis in the fall with our requests. We hope separating the events will help that," said Marcia Beauchamp, of the WRCC.
