SEA awards banquet planned

The Soldotna Equestrian Association will hold its annual awards banquet Saturday at Hogg Heaven Cafe in Soldotna. Anyone who participated in any equestrian events this summer is welcome.

The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. For more information, call 262-7006 or 260-6982.

Council to hold meeting

The North Peninsula Community Council will hold its next regular meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the Nikiski Senior Citizens Center. North Peninsula residents are invited. For more information, call 776-3257.

Lodge plans installation of officers

Kenai Masonic Lodge No. 11 of the Grand Lodge of Alaska will hold a public installation of its 2003 elected and appointed officers at 2 p.m. Dec. 7 in the Masonic Hall on the Kenai Spur Highway in Soldotna. The public is invited to attend. Billy Harris will be installed as master for 2003.

HEA, chambers sponsor light competitions

The Kenai and Soldotna chambers of commerce are holding Christmas light display contests. Homer Electric Association will award prizes for first, second and third in commercial and residential categories in both cities.

Well contamination may be present

Water well contamination may have occurred as a result of the recent flooding on the Kenai Peninsula. Residents affected by the flooding who believe their well may have been contaminated can obtain water test kits from the following locations between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday:

Northern Test Lab, 35186 Kenai Spur Highway, Soldotna, 262-4624.

Homer Fire Department, 604 E. Pioneer, Homer, 235-3155.

City of Seward Clerk's Office, 410 Adams, Seward, 224-4045.

The resident will be provided with written instructions on how to conduct the test. The water sample must be delivered to Northern Test Lab in Soldotna within 24 hours. The Kenai Peninsula Borough will reimburse Northern Test Lab for the test.

It is recommended that the well be decontaminated prior to taking the sample. Decontamination instructions are available at the above locations or online at

Groups organizing carnival

Phi Delta Kappa, Kenai Peninsula Reading Council and Community Schools are looking for community members to participate in the Love of Reading Carnival. The celebration of literacy will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 1 at Soldotna Middle School. The carnival will have a variety of activities to promote literacy. Individuals and organizations can participate.

Booths are available for entertainment, games and information. A minimum donation of $10 per booth is requested. Groups wishing to perform are invited. All money raised from booth fees will go toward funding scholarships and early literacy projects.
