Career highlights: Won two ARCA Series championships before moving to NASCAR Finished second in NASCAR points standings in 1955 and 1958. ... Won the NASCAR championship in 1973. His popularity among his peers was evident in 1973, when crew members from several teams helped him make repairs after crashing during the final race. He was able to return to the race and score enough points to beat Cale Yarborough by 67 miles (when the championship was determined by the number of miles completed in a season. ...
