Single primary ballot may have made a difference
Perhaps if the state had a single primary ballot listing all the candidates, issues, and other matters to be voted on, then Joe Miller might not have won.

Re: the Clarion editorial on drunk driving:
Murkowski should now take a stand
In a debate this election season, U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski dodged answering the question of whether or not she would vote to repeal the failed "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy by saying that she was waiting for the results of the study taken on service members willingness to repeal (the policy). Now that the survey is about to be released, Sen. Murkowski needs to remember her own words, and that she won this election on the backs of independents and Democrats unsatisfied with either other candidate.
Support the team that supports the community
Had you attended the Brown Bears game last Friday, Nov. 19, you would have understood reasons why the team is so valuable to our community. The Bears generously donated a portion of ticket sales and explained the programs of the United Way. As a United Way fundraiser, all 20 Bears shot pucks on me (2010 UW Campaign Chair). They scored 16 of 40 shots, a testament to the young gentlemen that certainly could have put many more past this old goaltender, just a year or 20 past my prime. Brown Bears efforts delivered a 5-4 overtime win over the Wenatchee Wild and approximately $2,000 to the 2010 United Way campaign.
Take a tip from Ben Franklin
There seems to be a lot of confusion as to what the Tea Party is after. Old Guard Republicans and Democrats alike are clueless. The Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and the thoughts of the people who drafted them are alien to these people. Here's what I believe the American Voters were looking for in their elected officials:

Razor clam calamity: Tides, winds wash thousands of clams up on beach
In the summer on a good minus tide, people flock to the Ninilchik beach by the hundreds to gather succulent razor clams. As anyone who has ever tried to harvest clams knows, digging clams can be back-breaking, finger-aching work -- unless nature does the job for you.

Why we are thankful
Today is the day we tend to reflect on the past year, and sometimes our lives, and give thanks for what we have. The other 364 days of the year we indulge in that traditional all-American pastime of whining, but for one day --Thanksgiving -- we do our best to remember what's important -- even if our situation is less than ideal.
Kayak slalom for food tests skills

If you missed this one, you can still participate in the Christmas slalom, coming up at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 18 at the pool.

BONNE TERRE, MISSOURI -- I'm visiting my brother and his wife in this small town 55 miles south of St. Louis. This is my first venture into the "Show-Me" state. To me, it's a whole 'nother world.
Refuge Notebook: Sitting in the name of science
Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and the Keen Eye Peninsula Birders birding club sponsored the Kenai Refuge's first "Big Sit." A Big Sit, popularly known to birders as "birding's most sedentary event," is a birding activity where participants record all the bird species they see or hear while within a 17-foot diameter circle during the course of one day, sometimes a full 24 hours. Often though, the activity is conducted for less than the full 24 hours, as in the case of the Kenai Refuge Big Sit.
