ANCHORAGE -- State flags were lowered to half staff Wednesday in memory of James Hesterberg, the state corrections officer who died last week in a collision on the Seward Highway.

Hesterberg, 48, was transporting prisoners to Spring Creek Correctional Center in Seward Nov. 19 when a tractor-trailer truck crossed the center line of the slush-slickened road and slammed into the prison transport van. Four of the prisoners also died in the crash.

Hesterberg, of Wasilla, was a 19-year veteran of the Department of Corrections and was anticipating retirement next year. He is the first corrections officer in Alaska to be killed in the line of duty, Alaska State Troopers said.

A funeral for Hesterberg was to be held in Anchorage late Wednesday morning, followed by a procession of law enforcement officers.
