'From Central America' a hit

Posted: Friday, November 28, 2008

Our heartfelt gratitude for all the individuals who purchased tickets and played an important role in making the Kenai River Rotary Club of Soldotna fundraiser, "From Central America with Fun," a great success! In addition to our event chair Al Kline, and co-MCs Dr. Jerry Hu and Sandra Ghormley, we were fortunate to have Lisa Schmitter and daughters Noelle and Vienna Schmitter as program presenters and David and Marilyn Albright as co-planners of the event. Both the Schmitter family and Albright family have extensive experience in Central America and were able to provide authentic goods and recipes from the region for sales items at the event.

Special appreciation goes to the staff at the La Pupusa Restaurant in Anchorage who drove down to prepare the home-made pupusas and the Acapulco Restaurant for providing the pork Tamales. We can't thank Charlotte Legg and Diane Wooten from Charlotte's catering enough for providing oversight, and that special Charlotte's flair to the event with cheese enchiladas, Gallo Pinot, salsa, sopapillas, fruit punch and the delicious sangria and beer and wine (at the 11th hour). Special thanks also goes to Kat Horn who gave up her ticket and donated her time working for Charlotte bartending at the event.

Adults and children alike had a ball learning to do the Zumba with Canetta Lloyd, who made time for us in her busy schedule and significantly raised the energy level in the room. The kids all enjoyed the opportunity to dance the Macarena lead by Noel and Vienna. The girls along with their 4-H Club also provided games and booths for making piatas and other crafts.

Kelly Keating, past president of Soldotna Rotary shared a few minutes about Rotary and we had booths and silent auction tables that raised money for schools in Central America and for local literacy projects in the community.

Our event would not have been possible without the hard work and generous contributions from: Charlotte's Catering, River City Books, Central Peninsula Hospital, Inlet Towers Hotel, Grant Aviation, Dr. Roger Hoebelheinrich, Funky Monkey, Hospice, Coca Cola-ANCO Distributors, Food Services of America, the Radtke Family, the Haggerty Family, Greatland Foods, Head Gear Knits, Three Bears, John and Debbie Standefer, Mary Bell, Kaladi Brothers, The Music Box, Kenaitze Head Start, the Kline Family, Karlene's Acupuncture, Abronne-Terri Cowart, Safeway Stores, Fred Meyer, J&H Sewing and Vacuum, Acapulco Mexican restaurant, Body, Mind & Spirit, the Peninsula Clarion, and the 4-H Club.

We thank you all again and look forward to spending another evening together next fall with families in our communities where we can have fun while learning and raise money to impact literacy here and around the world.
