Contracting seminar to be held

The Kenai Peninsula Small Business Development Center is co-sponsoring a seminar entitled "HUBZone Empowerment Contracting" with Katherine Anderson from Procurement Technical Assistance Center on Monday from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Red Diamond Center. This program is a "place-based" federal contracting program serving new market communities with low income or high unemployment. The program provides both federal prime contract and subcontract benefits. The goal is to bring job opportunities and capital investments to underutilized areas. This workshop is free and open to the public. For more information and registration, please call Lou at 262-7497.

Santa Claus needs volunteer help

Each holiday season, thousands of children across the United States write letters to Santa Claus, putting on paper what they want to find under the tree on Christmas morning.

At least 60,000 of these letters end up at North Pole, a branch of the Fairbanks Post Office. Although postal employees in Fairbanks and North Pole are dutiful Santa helpers, there are more letters than there are helpers.

The post office is looking for organizations willing to donate time to answer some of the letters, following set guidelines. In addition, the groups or organizations are invited to donate the stationery and the postage.

Once letters are answered, sealed and stamped, they are placed in a larger envelope and mailed to Fairbanks, where they receive the special North Pole cancellation.

Interested persons or groups should contact Fairbanks Postmaster Raymond Clark at 5400 Mail Trail, Fairbanks, AK 99709-9999) or Public Affairs and Communications at 3201 C Street, Suite 310, Anchorage, AK 99503-3934.
