Kenai celebrates Christmas season

The annual "Christmas Comes to Kenai" celebration gets under way at 10 a.m. today.

Sponsored by the Kenai Chamber of Commerce, this year's theme is "It's a Hooked on Kenai Christmas -- the Best Time of the Year."

Today's schedule of events includes:

10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Visit with Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and elves. Kenai chamber log cabin.

10 a.m. to 6 p.m. : Kenai Art Guild craft fair. Kenai Central High School.

10 a.m. to 6 p.m.: Village of Trees. A silent auction will be held for decorated trees. Behind the chamber cabin.

1 p.m. to 10 p.m.: Free ice skating at the Kenai rink (borrowed skates available).

1 to 2:30 p.m.: Open skate.

2:45 to 4:45 p.m.:13- to 18-year-old shinny hockey (helmets, knee and elbow pads and gloves required).

5 to 6 p.m.: Open broom ball (helmets required).

6 to 10 p.m.: Open skate.

2 p.m.: Drawing for For-get-Me-Knot quilt. Proceeds to benefit the food bank. Chamber cabin.

6 p.m.: Electric Light Parade. Runs from the Uptown Motel to the First National Bank of Alaska and into the Kenai Mall.

Following the parade, there will be theofficial lighting of the Christmas tree, an Old Town walking tour, caroling around the bonfire and fireworks along the Kenai beach.

The walking tour, which will be lit by luminaries, will feature several storytellers, as well as a view of the live Nativity, Slavonic caroling at the Russian Orthodox Church, and The Heartbeat of Mother Earth drummers and Jaba'lina dancers at Fort Kenay.

The bonfire will be at the Beluga Lookout Lodge. Fireworks can be seen from anywhere along the Kenai bluff.
