Wrestlers tune up for area meets

Posted: Friday, November 30, 2001

Wrestling teams from Seward and Kenai Central pulled into Skyview High School Thursday, and each team was able to glean something from the tri-meet.

The Seahawks, who have been hit particularly hard by the flu, were able to keep their healthy wrestlers sharp as they prepare for next week's area championship meet.

The Kardinals were able to gauge their recent progress as they also prepare for the area meet, and the host Panthers had an opportunity to showcase their team's depth with a 61-7 win over the Seahawks in a dual meet.

"We wanted to wrestle well as a team," said Skyview coach Neldon Gardner. "That was our best meet wrestling as a team. It's good to finish solid as a team. Everyone did a nice job."

Highlighting Skyview's team win over the Seahawks was Zach Rohr's win by pin over Darian Draper.

Draper, a defending state champion, led 11-4 entering the third period. Rohr scored a point with an escape, then caught Draper by surprise with a throw, earning two points with the takedown. Rohr was able to hold on to notch the pin at 4:48 of the match.

"Zach never quit, even when he was down by seven points," Gardner said.

Seward coach Ronn Hemstock said that Draper, along with about a third of his team, has been plagued by the flu in the past few weeks.

"Everybody's trying to put a fine edge on what they've got," Hemstock said. "We're just working hard, holding our heads up and trying to learn something."

Hemstock said that Zach Rininger wrestled well at 152 and Brandon Davis did well at 140 pounds. Hemstock said he moved several of his wrestlers up a weight class to create some different matchups.

Kenai coach Tony Prior said getting as much time on the mat as possible before the area meet was a priority.

"As many live matches as possible is good for them," Prior said.

Prior said that the Kardinals have stepped up their conditioning, and he was curious to see how his wrestlers had progressed as they went deeper into their matches.

Jacob Madrid had a good night for the Kardinals, winning twice by pin at 119, and then capping the meet with a win in an exhibition match against Skyview's Mike Lasky.

Skyview will host Soldotna today at 6 p.m. in a dual meet. The Panthers will join Kenai, Seward, Kotzebue, Homer, Houston and Nikiski at Soldotna for the North-South Tournament beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.
