Happy Thanksgiving to you all from the A Co. (FWD), 3/297th Infantry, Kenai Detachment here in Dona Ana, N.M.

We did get some time off, about two days. We currently are in a motel room in

El Paso with the Kenai and Nikiski guys Greg Fite, Troy Zimmerman and Ken Felchle. John McGrane and Mathew Lay are spending Thanksgiving with the family of a fellow soldier from Kodiak in New Mexico.

We slept in and went to breakfast at the time of our choosing. So we just ate cereal. We've had such a high cholesterol diet lately that we just went light. No running around carrying more than 60 pounds today.

Later on today, we'll go on the Army base here. They are having a Samoan celebration with the Samoans who were deployed from Samoa and Hawaii. They've

got food.

I also heard that the Rio Grande is about three miles from our hotel room. We may visit there. Mexico is on the other side. We can't go there, our pass doesn't allow it. However, last night two of our soldiers called us that they are stuck in Mexico. They couldn't find the bridge back. We've still got until 2300 (11 o'clock) on Friday night to get back.

We just returned last night from training seven days in the field on operations in an urban environment. We did a lot of live fire training. No one was hurt.

There was a KTUU Channel 2 news clip of our training last week. We spent about seven days in the field. You'll see Ken Felchle, the Kenai Middle School teacher , and Greg Fite, Era cargo supervisor in it. The video can be viewed at www.ktuu. com/features/video/ index.asp.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all on the Kenai Peninsula. We miss you all.

Don't worry about me and the guys. Today, we may not get a turkey, but we're setting our own schedule. We're choosing to stay in bed and watch the Macy's parade.

Sgt.1st Class Will Schwenke, U.S. Army National Guard
