Reader: Initiative promotes responsible mining in Alaska

Letter to the Editor

Posted: Friday, November 30, 2007

I am writing to urge everyone to sign the Alaska Clean Water Initiative. This initiative would promote responsible mining and protect Alaska's clean water and wild salmon by not allowing the dumping of any toxins into surface or groundwater used as salmon habitat or drinking water.

It would not affect existing mines and have no impact on placer mining or any small scale mining, as it only applies to new large scale operations, over 460 acres.

This initiative would simply make industry do it right.

If the initiative passes they can still mine, but they must live up to their promises not to pollute clean water or damage salmon habitat.

If you don't run into volunteers collecting signatures around town, initiative booklets are available at River City Books in Soldotna and Already Read Books on Attla Way and Old Town Music/Copy Cats in Kenai.

Enough signatures must be collected by January in order to get this important measure on the ballot, so please make a point of signing and help protect our clean water and wild places.
