Nikiski hockey splits with Monroe

Posted: Sunday, December 02, 2007

The Nikiski Bulldogs should have been the ones struggling come the third period.

After all, they only had one player on their bench.

Instead, the Bulldogs blitzed Monroe Catholic for four goals in the final stanza to claim a 4-1 Greatland Conference high school hockey win Friday at the Big Dipper Ice Arena.

"They just outworked us," Monroe coach Chris Matson said. "They only had seven kids. They had one kid on the bench. I give them a lot of credit, they had a lot of heart."

Beau Calderwood led the Nikiski comeback with two goals and an assist, and Zach Alkire and Matt Thompson each contributed a goal and an assist.

Tyler Holmes put the Rams up 1-0 at the 7:09 mark of the first period with helpers from Kevin Johnson and Andy Bunten, but it would be Monroe's only score of the night.

"We had some excellent opportunities, we just didn't convert on them," Matson said.

Riley Jewkes-Leonard stopped 28 shots for Monroe.

"Riley held us in the game the first two periods," Mattson said.

But against a resilient Bulldogs squad, it wasn't enough.

On Saturday, the Rams edged the Bulldogs, 2-1, behind goals from Jonathan Ringstad and Holmes.

Following Ringstad's tally at the 11:02 mark of the second period, Nikiski's Thompson evened the score roughly three minutes later when he scored off an assist from Calderwood. But Holmes' goal in the final frame proved to be the game winner.

Nikiski goaltender Tyler Bethune turned away 40 of the 42 shots he faced.
