Kenai Peninsula schools get together to finish preparation for postseason

Skyview goes undefeated at Kenai Duals

Posted: Sunday, December 03, 2000

The Kenai Peninsula's high school wrestlers had one more meet together before splitting up for next weekend's area meets, converging on Kenai Central High School Saturday for the Kenai Duals.

The Skyview Panthers won both of their dual meets on the afternoon, defeating Nikiski and Homer. The Bulldogs were 2-1 with wins over Soldotna and Homer, the Stars were 1-1 with a win over Kenai and the Mariners were 1-1, also with a win over Kenai. The Kardinals were 0-2 for the tournament.

"We like wrestling," said Skyview coach Neldon Gardner of the busy weekend in preparation for next week's area meets. "We train hard for regions and state right (here). They want to be ready to go, and if they're not wrestling, they lose their focus."

Neil Strausbaugh posted a pair of wins for the Panthers at 130 pounds and Melina Hutchison won twice at 112. Ian Leach won twice by technical fall at 140 for the Panthers.

While the Panthers were keeping focused, Soldotna continued to improve. Stars coach Sarge Truesdell was thrilled to see his team's match with Nikiski come down to the final bout.

"I consider Nikiski to be in the top three or four in the state," Truesdell said. "For my young kids to come out with a good shot at winning made me real happy."

Truesdell was excited to see Luke Ciufo fare well at 103 pounds and Colten Goracke wrestle well at 135. Truesdell also was pleased to see freshman Norman Orr stay close with Nikiski's Chris McCaughey and Kenai's Jacob La Shot.

Nikiski coach David Martian said things are starting to come together for the Bulldogs.

"Tela O'Donnell -- she's just stepped it up in all areas," Martian said of his 119-pounder.

Martian also was impressed with Chris McCaughey's efforts at 130.

Homer coach Chris Perk said it was good to get in another day of wrestling before the area meet. He said he liked what he saw from Devion Hagen, who went 3-0 for the afternoon at 103. Perk said that Monty Garroutte had a strong tournament at 119, and was pleased to see Chris Fraker wrestle a one-point match against Nikiski's Chris Roofe at 160.

"We're still trying to meet our goals," Perk said. "This was good. A lot of the guys here we'll see next week."

Ninilchik sent a handful of wrestlers to the meet who filled holes on other teams. Rex Savely had a pair of wins wrestling in the Stars' lineup at 125.

Kenai coach Roy McKenzie said Tony Bowers has continued to improve in his first season of wrestling.

"You can see the great strides he's making," McKenzie said.

La Shot won two matches for the Kardinals at 130, and Charlie Wiles bumped up a class to 171, where he went 1-1 for Kenai.

Friday and Saturday, Kenai will be at Skyview for the Area 4 Championships, along with Seward, Houston, Valdez, Cordova, Tok and Nenana.

Meanwhile, Homer, Ninilchik, Seldovia, Soldotna and Nikiski will represent the peninsula at Grace Christian at the Area 3 Championships.
