Barrow man arrested in assault case

BARROW (AP) -- A Barrow man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting two women.

James Ipalook, 46, was arrested Sunday evening and arraigned on three assault charges.

Ipalook's arrest came after North Slope Borough Police officers responded to a home where a woman suffered a puncture wound to her stomach. Ruth Long, 28, was taken to Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital and held for observation.

At the same residence Eileen Simmonds, 39, ran out of the house complaining that she could not see. Simmonds' eyes were swollen shut with numberous scratches and bruises on her face and a cut on her left hand. She was flown to Anchorage for treatment.

Police did not disclose what led to the assault.
