ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A Chignik man was arraigned in federal court on charges that he killed endangered Steller sea lions.

Stanley Roy Pedersen, 38, is charged with illegally taking Steller sea lions between July and September 1999. The charges follow an investigation by the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Pedersen also was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, which was a 12 gauge shotgun. And he was charged with being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm after having been convicted of domestic violence in 1997, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Anchorage.

The indictment also seeks the forfeiture of Pedersen's boat, the Kaylee, which allegedly was used to hunt the sea lions.
