FAIRBANKS (AP) -- The Western Governors' Association has approved a resolution backing a pipeline route that would take North Slope natural gas to market in the Lower 48 along the Alaska Highway.
The resolution, sponsored by Alaska Gov. Tony Knowles, was approved last week at the association's annual winter meeting in San Diego.
''It's great to have this show of unanimous support from my fellow Western governors,'' Knowles said. ''This resolution helps build the base of support we need to take on a massive undertaking such as this.''
The other route under serious consideration for the proposed gas pipeline would cross Alaska's Beaufort Sea and pick up Canadian gas in the Mackenzie River Delta before heading south.
The North Slope gas pipeline project has gained momentum in recent months as the price for natural gas in the Lower 48 has more than doubled.
