JUNEAU (AP) -- Cathy Munoz, a former Juneau Assembly member, plans to run as a Republican candidate for the state Senate, she said Monday.
Munoz could face first-term incumbent state Sen. Kim Elton, D-Juneau, in the November 2002 election. Elton said Monday he intends to seek re-election.
Munoz, 37, said her experience as finance chairwoman for the Assembly would be useful in the Legislature.
Munoz was appointed to an unexpired term on the Assembly in 1995 and later won two full terms. She left city office in October.
Munoz is co-owner in a downtown Juneau store.
Elton won the senate seat in 1998 after serving two terms in the state house. He is among only six Democrats in the 20-seat state Senate.
