Soldotna High School hosted Homer for a wrestling meet Friday, and while team scores weren’t kept, each coach was able to get a match for every eligible wrestler.

“The good thing was that everybody got to wrestle,” said Soldotna coach Bill Carlson. “It was worth it. It was a good experience for the whole lineup.”

Carlson said the highlight of the meet for the Stars was seeing Michael Zufelt, a senior, pick up a win at 152 pounds. Zufelt scored a near fall to take a 7-3 lead in the second period. His opponent, Brandon Weaver, battled back to within two points and had Zufelt in trouble in the closing minute of the match. Zufelt was able to work a reversal as Weaver pressed for back points in the closing seconds, hanging on to win the match.

“He needed that one on senior night,” Carlson said.

While Homer coach Chris Perk said he would have liked to have had a traditional dual meet, he said it was a good meet after a tough week of practice. Perk said it can more productive to stay on the peninsula for a meet and take advantage of the extra practice time rather than going to Anchorage for a big tournament every weekend, where wrestlers might not get more than two matches.

“We’re like Soldotna. We’re pretty young and pretty inexperienced. It’s just a matter of time, just getting more matches and more practice in,” Perk said.

Perk said he saw good improvement in his team.

“A bunch of guys are starting to hit the moves we’ve been drilling,” Perk said.

Perk was impressed with Weaver’s effort at 152 despite the loss, and also liked what he saw from Camron Hagen, who was wrestling his first match of the season. Hagen won 11-5, defeating Erick Morris at 152 pounds.

Jesse Carlson (135), Jared Oleson (160), Ethan Waters (189) and Jose Gomez (215) notched pins for the Stars while Brittney Wyatt, Zach Hinsberger and John Isaac posted wins by pin for the Mariners.
