Foundations support food bank campaign

The Kenai Peninsula Food Bank is pleased to announce grant support for our "Building to Nourish" campaign from the Alaska Community Foundation and the Kenai Peninsula Foundation Fund.

The grants are made possible through the generous support of Kenai Peninsula Fund and the Alaska Community Foundation. The Kenai Peninsula Fund is a fund of the Alaska Community Foundation, a statewide nonprofit offering a range of charitable funds allowing donors to advance a cause, support an individual organization, or provide flexible support for community needs. Since 1996, ACF has helped people connect with causes they care about, now and for generations to come. The Foundation receives gifts from thousands of generous individuals and families, and awarded grants of more than $10 million to a broad range of nonprofit organizations in the past year. The Kenai Peninsula Food Bank "Building to Nourish" campaign enhances direct food relief to member agencies and Kenai Peninsula residents. The program increases warehouse square footage by 1,746 square feet and adds the following: energy efficient cooler/freezer, electrical upgrades, arctic entry to the front of the building, increased client waiting room area, shelter for warehouse pickup and deliveries, improved handicap and disabled access, improved intake and sorting areas providing a safer environment, warehouse restroom and a janitorial closet.

The freezer and cooler now sit on a heated cement slab. The new addition will feature a larger cooler and freezer unit sitting on an unheated cement slab. The current freezer and cooler space is inadequate and we frequently turn away food contributions or disperse them all in one day, as we do not have sufficient storage space. Inadequate space for storage keeps impoverished Alaskans from having the nutritional support that they so desperately need. Additional maintenance costs will be offset by the energy savings implemented from the project.

The Kenai Peninsula Food Bank serves the entire Kenai Peninsula Borough and touches over 20 percent of the borough population every month. We are the only organization for food relief in our region proposing a project of this nature at this time. The Food Bank is well established in serving our community and given the opportunity we can expand upon our services to help thousands of additional impoverished Alaskans.

Upon execution of this project we will have fixed a great number of our weaknesses that prevent us from further assisting our community. We are extremely grateful and appreciate the Alaska Community Foundation and The Kenai Peninsula Foundation Fund for presenting us with the opportunity to continue our efforts in the fight against hunger.
