Alexander M. 'Joe' Ross Sr.

Longtime Nikiski resident Alexander M. "Joe" Ross Sr. died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna, surrounded by his family. He was 94.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 7, at Peninsula Memorial Chapel, 5839 Kenai Spur Highway in Kenai. An additional viewing will be held from 10 to 10:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 8, followed by a Panikhida service at 10:30 a.m., and the funeral services at 11 a.m. at the Holy Assumption of the Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Church in Kenai. Fr. Thomas Andrew will officiate. Graveside services will follow at the Monfor Family Cemetery in Kenai. Military honors will be performed by the VFW Post No. 10046 and American Legion Post No. 20. A gathering will follow the services at Tyotka's Elder Center in Kenai.

Mr. Ross was born July 16, 1914, to Robert Garland and Agnes Bernice (Laningfelt) Ross in Broadview, Mont. He entered into the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged. He moved to Kodiak in 1942, then moved to Kenai in 1944. He homesteaded on Bernice Lake in Nikiski in 1952. Mr. Ross worked as a carpenter, electrician, radio technician, plumber, trucker, boiler maker and was a commercial fisherman in Cook Inlet, until he retired.

Mr. Ross was a member of the Russian Orthodox Church in Kenai and of the First Baptist Church of Port Nikiski. He assisted with the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new V.A. Clinic in Kenai on Nov. 4, 2006. He was an honorary member of the Kenaitze Indian Tribe. Mr. Ross enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing, hunting and reading.

"Joe enjoyed spending time with his family, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a wonderful father and taught us all a lot about life," his children said.

Mr. Ross was preceded in death by his wife, Freda J. Ross; daughters, Georgia Woern and Pearl Ross; and grandson, Jackie Moore.

He is survived by his brother, Robert G. Ross of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Barbara Ross of Richland, Wash., Robert G. II and Lori Ross of Nikiski and Alexander M. Jr. and Monique Ross of Nikiski; daughters and sons-in-law, Juanita and Pat O'Brien, Evelyn and Clinton Redding of Hilo, Hawaii, and Valerie Ross and Randy Anderson of Kenai; grandchildren, Stacy Marino, Nichole Mans and Andrew Ross, all of Richland, Andrea, Jolene, Bobby, Krystal, Alex III and Jessica Ross, Pat, Shon, Sarah and Angela O'Brien, all of Nikiski, Christopher Ross of Killeen, Texas, David Betz of Nikiski, Susanne and RJ Redding of Hilo, Rusty Seaman Jr., Amanda and Bobby Berg of Soldotna, Leslie and Ralph Hemphill III and Danny Moore, all of Kenai; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Charlene and Paul Delago of Nikiski; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, AJ and Connie Sacaloff of Nikiski; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and other family members.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
