Aviation training center opens

The Medallion Foundation will host a grand opening of its mini-training center, featuring Medallion's advance training device at 5:30 p.m. today at the south end of Kenai Municipal Airport. It is open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.

T-200 poster contest deadline Wednesday

The annual Tustumena 200 Sled Dog Race poster design contest has begun. The winners of the contest will be invited to ride in the ceremonial start of the race and the wining picture will be reproduced on the poster for the 2005 Tustumena 200. The second-place drawing will be used for the race program.

Entrants must be in grades one through six. One entry per student is allowed, and the pictures must be original, with no computers, copies or tracing used. Crayon, markers or colored pencils are allowed. Pictures should show friendly competition, the humane care of sled dogs or musher-dog team involvement in the T-200.

All entries must be on 8 1/2-by-11-inch paper. The artist's name, address, city, phone, teacher's name, school and grade should be on the back written in pencil. Entrants are asked to not fold entries.

Entries should be submitted to Jersey Subs in Soldotna by Wednesday. Winners will be notified by mail.

Christmas tree lighting planned

The Soldotna Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. Thursday at Parker Park and the Soldotna Senior Citizens Center on West Park Avenue. Santa and Mrs. Clause will arrive by fire engine. Children can have their pictures taken with Santa for $1. Other activities will include free sleigh rides and Christmas carols sung by the Skyview High School Swing Choir. Cookies, coffee and hot chocolate will be provided. Mayor Dave Carey will preside as master of ceremonies.

Area residents interested in making an ornament to help decorate the park and city buildings should drop it off at the chamber office or at city hall by noon today. For more information, call 262-3566.

KWF to host open house

The Kenai Watershed Forum will host an open house from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at its office in the Blazy Mall in Soldotna. It is open to the public. Refreshments will be available. For more information, call Josselyn at 260-5449.

Ford to perform at library

Carol Ford of the Kenai Performers will perform "Frog and Toad" at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Kenai Community Library. This is a family event. Food and door prizes will be available. For more information, call Corey Hall at 283-4378.

Caregiver support group to meet

There will be a caregiver support group meeting at 12:45 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Seward Senior Citizens Center. For more information, call 262-1280.

'Toy and Joy' applications being accepted

The Salvation Army's "Toy and Joy" Christmas sign-up is taking place through Dec. 17. Applications are available at The Salvation Army family service office at 11824 Kenai Spur Highway. The office hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. For a list of information that is needed in the application process, call 283-4035 or stop by the office.
