Caregiver meetings slated

National Family Caregiver Support Program will hold a caregiver support meeting from 1 to 2 p.m. today at the Sterling Senior Center and host an introduction to the national family caregiver support program from 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 20 at the Kenai Senior Citizens Center. CPGH board to meet

Central Peninsula General Hospital Inc. board of directors will meet at 4:30 p.m. today in the Iliamna Conference Room at the hospital. It is open to the public.

Shuttle launch celebration set

The Challenger Learning Center of Alaska will host an celebration of the launch of STS-116, piloted by Alaska’s first astronaut, Bill Oefelein, at 5 p.m. today at the center at 9711 Kenai Spur Highway next to Kenai Central High School.

The celebration will feature an open house at 5 p.m.; live launch feed at 5:39 p.m.; and Starlab planetarium presentations begins at 6 p.m. The center will have a telescope set up outside, weather permitting. Tours of the center also will be offered.

Soroptimists to meet

Soroptimist International of the Kenai Peninsula will meet at 5:30 p.m. today at Bear’s Den Restaurant in Soldotna. A gift exchange is planned. For more information, call Sandra at 260-5451.

Photo guild to host exhibition

Kenai Peninsula Photographers Guild will sponsor an open exhibition highlighting the work of area photographers using traditional and contemporary photographic processes. An opening reception is planned from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center.

The exhibit will run through Dec. 27. For more information, call 283-1991.

Soldotna lights up the season

The Soldotna Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Christmas tree lighting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at Central Emergency Services.

Santa will arrive by fire engine to greet children and listen to their Christmas wish lists. Pictures will be taken for $1 per photo. Free dog-sled rides will be available for all who attend, and the “4 PeninsuLads” (a barbershop quartet) will sing Christmas songs. Refreshments will be provided.

The theme is “Support our Troops.” The chamber will celebrate by hanging yellow ribbons with the name of someone serving in the U.S. military on a tree at the site.

Community members interested in having an ornament included may bring it to the tree at any time, city hall, or the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce by noon today. Paper ornaments will be laminated.

Cookies by the pound Saturday

The 14th annual Cookies by the pound fundraiser will be begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church at 225 South Spruce Street in Kenai. A wide variety of cookies will be available for purchase. The cost is $6 per pound.
