Writers group meets today

The Central Peninsula Writers Group meets at 6:30 p.m. today at Kenai Community Library. It is open to the public.

Auditions for musical open

The Kenai Performers will hold auditions for its winter musical, “Beauty and the Beast,” at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Renee C. Henderson Auditorium at Kenai Central High School. Anyone interested in auditioning for singing, acting and dancing can do so Friday or Saturday. Callbacks will be at 3 p.m. Sunday. Dance moves, songs and scripts will be provided at the auditions. The show will be in February-early March and rehearsals start in earnest in January. For more information, call Carol Ford at 776-8308.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary sponsoring contest

The VFW Ladies Auxiliary of the Jerry V. Horn Memorial Post No. 10046 will sponsor the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Awards. The contest was developed as a way to encourage high school students to use their artistic talents to express their patriotism.

Students in grades nine through 12, including home-school students, are eligible.

Artwork, including digital art entries, must be submitted on paper or canvas. Discs or CDs will not be accepted. Watercolor, pencil, pastel, charcoal, tempera, crayon, acrylic, pen-in-ink or oil may be used. Artwork must be matted but not framed, not smaller than 8- by 10-inches or larger than 18- by 24-inches, not including the mat.

The first-place state winner will go to the national level, where the first-place prize is $10,000, a jacket, plaque, airfare and two nights lodging to attend the 2007 Ladies Auxiliary National Convention.

New book out of this world

Amy Murrell-Haunold of Kenai and her sister, Anchorage artist Cindy Pendleton, announce the release of their children’s book, “Greetings, Earthling: Zipper’s Alaska Adventure.”

The book will be sold Saturday during the Cookies Buy The Pound sale at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Kenai starting at 10 a.m. until the cookies are gone. One dollar of each book sold will be contributed to the cookie sale’s mission project.

There will be a story time and book party from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 16 at Cook Inlet Books in Anchorage.
