Longtime Soldotna resident Joel L. Wilkins died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at her home in Soldotna. She was 64.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28 at College Heights Baptist Church on Kalifornsky Beach Road in Soldotna. Pastor Scott Coffmann will officiate at the memorial service. Her ashes will be buried in Green Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Natchez, Miss.
Ms. Wilkins was born Nov. 10, 1938, in Ferriday, La. She moved to Soldotna in March 1969. She worked as the finance officer for the city of Soldotna for 28 years.
Ms. Wilkins was a member of College Heights Baptist Church and an honorary member of the Soldotna Elks in recognition of her involvement with the Flags of Soldotna program. She enjoyed reading, family cookouts, her grandchildren's activities and taking care of everything with the city of Soldotna.
"We knew what a profound impact 'Mama Jo' had on our lives. What has surprised and amazed us is the overwhelming response from the people of the community. She will be greatly missed by all," her family said.
Ms. Wilkins was preceded in death by her father, Gordon Lazarus, and a daughter, Donna Wilkins.
She is survived by her mother, Lyda Mae Lazarus of Clayton, La.; daughter and son-in-law, Rena' and Kim Gardner of Soldotna; son and daughter-in-law, Gordon 'Butch' and Nancy Wilkins of Soldotna; her children's father, Charles Wilkins of Ash Flat, Ark.; grandchildren, Severin and Adrienne Gardner of Soldotna and Jason and Sarah Wilkins; sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Lew Denny of Jacksonville, Fla.; niece, Melanie and husband, Charlie Goodwin of Wasilla; and numerous friends and colleagues around the state.
Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
