Skiers drive to Hatcher Pass to find snow

Posted: Sunday, December 08, 2002

If the snow doesn't come to you, you have to go to the snow.

Kenai Peninsula schools Kenai, Soldotna, Homer and Seward did just that Friday and Saturday for the Mat-Su Hatcher Pass Invite.

The only reason the schools went to Hatcher Pass, which is north of Wasilla and about a six-hour drive from Kenai, is that, that area is, by most reports, the only area in Alaska open to cross-country skiing right now.

Friday and Saturday, schools were supposed to be at the Skyview Invitational at snowless Tsalteshi Trails.

No team scores were kept at the meet, but several peninsula skiers fared well despite limited, or no, experience on snow this season.

The Soldotna boys, the three-time defending Region III champions, had a strong showing. Friday, the Stars had five skiers in the top 10 in the 3.5-kilometer classic race.

Senior Daniel Harro won the race with a time of 11 minutes, 32 seconds. Also for Soldotna, Mark Harro was second, David Hernandez was seventh, Spencer Litzenberger tied for eighth and Ryan Walton finished 10th.

The other peninsula finisher in the top 10 of Friday's race was Kenai's Andy Banas, who placed sixth.

In Saturday's 3.5-kilometer freestyle race, the Stars placed three skiers in the top 10. Chugiak's Justin Singleton took the event with a time of 9:53, while Daniel Harro was second at 10:13. Also in the top 10 for Soldotna were Hernandez at fourth and Mark Harro at fifth.

Saturday, the Kenai boys had two skiers in the top 10, with Jordan Engel placing eighth and Andy Banas sliding into ninth.

On the girls side of things, Soldotna also turned in some top performances. In Friday's 3.5-kilometer classical race, the Stars had four place in the top 10. SoHi's Rachel Goldstein was second, more than a minute behind winner Tazlina Mannix of Susitna Valley. Also for Soldotna, Jenny Smola was fifth, Heidi Keller was sixth and Tess Casswell was ninth.

Other peninsula skiers in the top 10 Friday were Homer's Aleta Phelps in third, Kenai's Severin Hagen-Lillevik in fourth and Kenai's Katie Burck in 10th.

In Saturday's 3.5-kilometer freestyle race, Mannix once again turned in a dominant performance. This time, she topped runner-up Goldstein by almost three minutes. Other peninsula skiers in the top 10 Saturday were Phelps in third, Hagen-Lillevik in fifth and Smola in sixth.
