Two rescued after snowmachine sinks

WHITE MOUNTAIN (AP) -- Two people were rescued after their snowmachine sank in water while traveling from Golovin to White Mountain, state troopers said.

Joseph Simon, 22, and Stephanie Buffas, 21, both of White Mountain, used a radio to call for help last week when they found themselves in chest-deep water and standing on their snowmachine.

With temperatures at 33 degrees, they didn't have survival gear to survive the night in the water.

A team of searchers found the two four hours after they became stuck.

Searchers used a small boat and paddled approximately three-quarters of a mile to reach Simon and Buffas. They were cold and wet but generally in good condition, and made it back to White Mountain safely, troopers said.
