Sterling resident Marilyn Jane Mayfield died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna with her husband by her side. She was 71.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, at the First Assembly of God Church in Albany, Ore., with Pastor Curt Myers officiating. A reception will follow the service.
Mrs. Mayfield was born Oct. 11, 1933, to Ralph and Elva (Kurtz) Huish in Kent, Ohio. She moved with her family to Huntington Beach, Calif., and graduated from Huntington Beach Union High School in 1951. She furthered her education with two years of pre-med studies and nursing school.
Mrs. Mayfield lived in California and Shoreacres, Texas, while her husband, John, worked on the Apollo space program. She was a wife, mother and homemaker most of her life. She also worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for three years.
She moved to Oregon in 1972, living in the Albany area until they retired in 1993. She and her husband sold their home and started traveling in their RV in 1994. They made a winter trip up the Alaska Highway to Alaska for the birth of their third granddaughter. Mrs. Mayfield continued to travel throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico until physical limitations forced her to stop.
The Mayfields built a log home in Sterling in the woods, which was a childhood dream of hers.
"She enjoyed their home very much, especially the birds and wildlife. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, camping and hiking prior to her physical limitations," her family said.
"She loved the outdoors and taught us to love God's creation. In her younger years, she enjoyed sharing the Gospel as a Bible school teacher, youth leader and choir member. We know she's singing in the greatest choir now," her daughter said.
Mrs. Mayfield was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Leonard and Robert Huish and one which was an infant; sisters, Ruth Huff and Letha Cole; aunt, Tillie Kurtz; and nephew, Richard Huish.
