Kards fall to Bartlett

Bartlett's Sean Howard scored with 9:34 left in the game to lead the Golden Bears to a 1-0 nonconference victory over Kenai Central Saturday at the McDonald Center in Eagle River.

Drew O'Connell stopped all 20 shots he faced to shut out the Kardinals. Ryan Dukowitz made 18 saves for Kenai.

Service 6, Soldotna 2

One night after coming up a goal short against top-ranked Dimond, the Soldotna hockey team had a much more difficult time sticking with second-ranked Service.

The Cougars notched a 6-2 victory over the Stars Saturday at Ben Boeke Arena.

Soldotna actually got on the board first when Peter Kim, on an assist from Scott Laurion, lit the lamp just 2 minutes, 9 seconds, into the game.

However, Service answered by scoring six of the game's next seven goals. Derek Martin finished up the scoring in the third period for Soldotna.

New speedskating World Record set

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- Catriona LeMay Doan of Canada set a world record in the women's 500 meters Sunday at a World Cup event in long track speedskating.

LeMay Doan was timed in 37.22 seconds at the Olympic Oval to lower her record of 37.29 set last season. She had tied her 500 record Saturday.

''I'm doing what I love and seeing what I can do,'' LeMay Doan said.

The gold medalist at the 1998 Winter Olympics remains unbeaten at 500 meters after two World Cup stops.

Toyoki Takeda of Japan won the men's 500 in 34.62. Gerard Vanvelde of the Netherlands was second in 34.88 and Jeremy Wotherspoon of Canada was third in 34.93.
