U.S. salvages 12th in biathlon World Cup

The United States biathlon team finished 12th in a World Cup relay on Sunday in Hochfilzen, Austria.

Kasilof biathlete Jay Hakkinen skied the first leg for the Americans and struggled with his shooting. In the relay, each athlete must do a prone shooting stage and a standing shooting stage.

At each stage, each athlete has eight rounds of ammunition for five targets. The first five rounds are loaded from the magazine. If the athlete knocks down a target with each of these rounds, the athlete can get back on the course. If a target is missed, the athlete must load the remaining three rounds individually. If there are still targets standing after those three rounds, then the athlete must ski a 150-meter penalty loop for each target left standing.

At the prone stage, Hakkinen had to ski three penalty loops and at the standing stage he had to ski two penalty loops. When Hakkinen tagged Lowell Bailey of Lake Placid, N.Y., the Americans were in last, or 22nd, place. Bailey moved the U.S. up to 19th, Tim Burke of Paul Smiths, N.Y., moved the U.S. to 16th and Jeremy Teela of Anchorage moved the U.S. all the way up to 12th at the finish.
